Favorite Podcasts for Career Development

As I incorporate more and more podcasts into my listening repertoire, I get more and more picky. For career development, that's no exception. As someone who has significant experience being a career mentor for students, residents, etc. when it comes to my own development I expect certain things. I expect actionable items. Specific information. Applicability to the stage in my career. And more than interviews discussing "becoming" stories. Here are some of my favorites.

Women at Work

womenatworkpodcast

This show is one that I wish I had during residency to work through in an academic setting. When I moved to my new job out of residency, I lost the day-to-day interactions with my female career mentors. Harvard Business Review's Women at Work has been a great substitute while I develop new mentors where I am now. One compoment that makes this show unique are the discussion guides for each episode!

Bossed Up

I've featured the Bossed Up Podcast in past favorites, and it definitely still applies for the career category. This show publishes 2 episodes per week: one with an interview that answers a "Career Conundrum" from a listener (~30-45 minutes) and the second is a quick career/life tip (~5 minutes) from Emilie herself. I've been a fan of Emilie's since she was co-host of Stuff Mom Never Told You, and I had the pleasure of being part of its first ever LIVE episode recording at General Assembly last month.

Ask A Manager

askamanagerpodcast

Another repeat from my post on favorite female hosts, this is a really unique set up because the host walks through a phone call with the person asking for career advice on a particular topic. You get to hear the back and forth from both perspectives, and it feels like you're getting to hold the conversation yourself. The topics are also unique from what I've heard from any other shows.

Femails

I've been following Career Contessa for a few years now, from their email newsletter to their hilarious Instagram posts. They are now in their first season of a new podcast, Femails! The guests on the show teach me something new every episode, and what I love is that they don't just delve into specific career topics, but they discuss deeper life topics and how they can apply to our careers.

Some episodes include:

  • Why We Meltdown
  • Non-Overnight Success
  • Ambition Trap
  • Underdogging Your Way To The Top
  • Managing Anxiety, Managing Yourself

Ellevate

ellevatenetworkpodcast

This was one of the first times where a podcast helped me discover a new resource, as opposed to the other way around. When perusing the suggestions in iTunes I came across this list of episodes and the topics really brought me in. The Ellevate Network is a global community of professional women who create, inspire and lead. You can join the community through paid membership and value diversity, teamwork, gratitude, respect.

Some episodes include:

  • Driving Diversity and Inclusion
  • Giving Women Room to Fail
  • Owning Your Influence
  • Unpacking Privilege
  • Growing with Vision
